First peek inside the Cantu Family!

So I completely stole this idea from a friend that I met through Genesis...(thanks Kim!) and decided I wanted to make a blog of my family events. It will be exciting to look back on this and see how far Alex and I have come in such a short amount of time.

Here's a very brief history of how we started...we met each other in college at a UT party, where believe it or not, I hit on him. I programmed my number into his phone on Saturday night and he called me back on Sunday. It was love at first sight and a bond that we would share forever. Next thing we know, it's been over 7 years of us dating and he proposes in New York, which was a complete shock to me!

I have been bombarded with people asking me the same question, “how did Alex propose?” I decided to write the story down for those that don’t get my personal detailed replay. (yes, this is the short version) Side note: this year, Alex ended up moving to Midland, Texas for his job as a cost engineer in early April. Don’t ask…it’s in the middle of nowhere. It relates to the story but he is back in Houston for good now. :) So here goes:

Mid-June- Alex visits and we meet our custom ring maker to get an idea of what I like.

August 1st- Alex starts drawing the ring (yes, he designed it) while he is in Midland. (I didn’t know until afterwards about this)

August 24th- On my birthday, he visits again, manages to pick up the finished ring and ask my father for permission to propose. (didn’t know until afterwards about this either)

September 19- I find a ticket to New York in my email from my sister and brother-in-law (they live in New York) to visit them as a belated birthday gift. They were in London during my birthday so it didn’t occur to me this was a scheme by Alex. I was just too excited to think anything of it. Also, Alex was in Midland so I didn’t really put the two together.

September 25th- Thursday night and I stay up till 1am packing and wake up at 3am for my flight at Intercontinental at 6am. (Even though I know why she booked the early flight afterwards, I will never do that one again!)

September 26th- I board the flight at 5:30 am. I land around noon and my sister comes to pick me up. We head back to her apartment and then out to lunch. Since its rainy and muggy outside, she mentions she wants to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (aka the MET) I am not entirely thrilled at the thought of walking around a museum when I am running on two hours of sleep and the weather is sucking outside but I go with the flow and we start heading over there. Once I get there I was happy because it really was interesting. We are looking around the Medieval section (Mine and Alex's favorite time era) and out of nowhere Alex comes up and hugs me. ME<--IN COMPLETE SHOCK!!! I think I was somewhere between hyperventilating and shock because I was shaking and saying “no…I can’t believe you’re here.” Then, the next thing I know, he gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him in the middle of the Medieval section in the MET!!! Of course, I am crying at this point and mutter out an incoherent “yes.” All the museum spectators are “ooohhh’ing” and “awwww’ing” but I am too happy to be embarrassed.

Afterwards, I start calling my family and friends and realize that everyone knew the plan except me. I was such a happy schmuck. =) My sister and brother-in-law than toasted Alex and I at a trendy champagne bar. Then we separated and had a romantic dinner for two at a restaurant, followed by drinks at the Waldorf Astoria. (my favorite hotel in NY due to Eddie Murphy’s movie- Coming to America)

I found out later that Alex had flown in early Wednesday and his ticket was to return with me on Tuesday morning. After seven and a half years of dating, I have to say Friday was the best day of my life!!!

Here is probably the oldest picture I have of Alex and I.
